Week 2 of the 2011 CSA season brought asparagus, radishes, green onions, garlic scapes, and mixed greens with a lot of Swiss chard.
Last year garlic scapes were a revelation. What are garlic scapes? The scape is the shoot of the garlic plant that grows vigorously in the spring. If a gardener wants to maximize the growth of the bulb in the ground then the scape will be trimmed. Lucky for the gardener is that the scape can be used in many of the same ways as bulb garlic. The flavor is much more mild than bulb garlic so it is a great addition to breakfast meals or used in salads.
The weather here in Iowa has been brutal this spring. Early in the season the heat was approaching 100 degrees. Now the temperature has dropped and rain has fallen in great quantities. Everyone at Supernatural Organics assures me that it will be a good season and I have no reason to think otherwise.
