On July 10th a new map was released at the U.S. Drought Monitor. Here is the view for the Midwest:
The area where I live in eastern Iowa has moved from moderate to severe drought. The weather forecast for the next week is nothing but heat, sunny skies, and no precipitation. I shudder to think about what this map is going to look like next week as the drought conditions persist.
This year’s corn crop is teetering on the brink of disastrous as the drought conditions worsen. The government has already reduced its estimate for this year’s crop by 12 percent with the expectation that the yield will fall further as conditions persist or worsen.
