It is tempting to curl up into the fetal position and hope that what happened last night was all just a mirage. Hope that the single most unqualified person to ever run for President of the United States was not actually elected. Hope that a person who cannot contain themselves on social media when provoked in the slightest way is not in possession of launch codes for nuclear weapons.
But it did happen.
If you do not think Republicans like Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan are licking their chops with a legislative wish list you are wrong. If you do not think that the nominee to fill Antonin Scalia’s empty seat on the Supreme Court will be an arch conservative you are wrong. If you do not think that progress made in making health care affordable and accessible is under threat you are wrong. If you do not think that a woman’s right to reproductive freedom is precarious you are wrong.
You might as well just curl up in the fetal position.
Now is when the real fight begins for progressives in the United States. In two years there will be a mid-term election and it needs to be nothing short of a referendum on everything done or said by Donald Trump from this moment onward. We need to make Republicans own every moment of the next two years without exception.
When they pass a bill that guts Obamacare by curtailing Medicaid expansion, allowing for exclusion based on preexisting conditions, putting back in place lifetime limits on health care expenses, and eliminating exchanges we need to make Republicans own that moment.
When they nominate someone for the Supreme Court who swings to the right of Clarence Thomas thus ensuring that decisions like Citizens United that tilt the playing field in favor of the uber wealthy we need to make Republicans own that moment.
When efforts to combat climate change, ensure clean air, and guarantee clean water are eviscerated we need to make Republicans own that moment.
When international alliances that have formed the bedrock of international stability since the close of World War II are under attack by politicians that have no idea how these alliances function we need to make Republicans own that moment.
When the economy falters and the solution is more tax cuts for the wealthy while infrastructure crumbles, schools falter, and people literally go hungry as SNAP is likely doomed we need to make Republicans own that moment.
When Donald Trump says something that is offensive, which is sure to happen, we need to make Republicans own that moment. He was their nominee and he is their President.
In 2018 there will be a mid-term election that will afford the American people to say enough. Today is when you wake up, dust yourself off, brew a strong cup of coffee, and get to figuring out how you can make a difference. Choosing to do nothing is the same thing as voting for Donald Trump.
