Guess what? Paul Ryan, the wonder boy of the right wing, wants to kill Medicare. Don’t believe me? Here it is in his own words:
Obamacare rewrote Medicare … so if you’re going to repeal and replace Obamacare, you have to address those issues as well. … What people don’t realize is that Medicare is going broke, that Medicare is going to have price controls. … So you have to deal with those issues if you’re going to repeal and replace Obamacare. Medicare has got some serious problems because of Obamacare. Those things are part of our plan to replace Obamacare.
Do you see what he is doing in that quote? He is making sure that every time he says Medicare that he connects it with Obamacare so that he can create some cover. His excuse will be that in order to repeal Obamacare he had to gut Medicare like a carp.
Here is what Paul Ryan, himself a recipient of government health care from his job as a member of Congress, wants to do. If you are over the age of 65 and eligible for Medicare you would get a voucher to buy insurance in the private marketplace instead of full coverage.
Sounds great right? Except, who is going to cover someone over the age of 65 for any sort of economic price? Not one insurance company and Paul Ryan knows this, but he does not care because he needs to sacrifice seniors before the altar of Ayn Rand. Without the rules put in place under Obamacare there will be no restriction for denying coverage based on a pre-existing condition or instituting lifetime caps for coverage. How many people over the age of 65 could be considered to have no pre-existing conditions?
This is the first of many battles. Every person in the United States needs to write their Representative and Senators to ask them if they support Paul Ryan’s plan to gut Medicare. If the answer is anything other than a complete “no” then these members of Congress need to be taken to task for supporting one of the greatest social safety net programs in the history of the United States.
Make the Republicans own their right wing fantasies. When they fail the failure will be their own creation.
Where is the Tea Party when you need them:
