Rod Blum is having a terrible time here in the Cedar Valley the past couple of days. Hot on the heels of his miserable performance in an interview with my new hero Josh Scheinblum where he stormed off after being asked a question about campaign contributions, the congressman for the 1st district held town halls in Cedar Rapids and Cedar Falls. Things went about as well as anyone could have hoped.
In Cedar Rapids the crowd was primed to ask lots of questions about health care and ask they did. You can see the highlights of the town hall here. The gist of things is that people are unhappy that Rod Blum voted for a health care overhaul that was pushed through congress without a score by the CBO, without any substantial hearings, and without any substantial public comment.
Remember, Paul Ryan—the beady eyed leader of this gang—criticized the passage of the Affordable Care Act for all the same reasons even though that process took a year. I guess that Republicans were just all too giddy to screw people over. Just look at the happiness in Jason Chaffetz’s face as he comes back from surgery on a pre-existing condition to gut your health care:
His heart is racing with the possibility that now is the time he gets to put his big boy pants on and really screw over some little people. Gotta’ get more tax cuts for the millionaires and billionaires who make the Republicans go.
Back to our embattled congressman Rod Blum. Things went even worse for Blum in Cedar Falls. Seeking to placate the crowd he told them how he did not agree with the process of passing the bill before knowing the costs. Instead of voting against the bill, which a single vote from any Republican would have killed the passage, he vote for the bill. Nothing shows how resistant you are to something like voting for its passage.
Rod Blum does not represent the first district of Iowa. Hell, he does not represent the state of Iowa or any of our interests. He represents Rod Blum and the people who pay to keep him in Washington D.C. Who is that? Outside groups like American Action Network spent big to keep him in office. Who is the American Action Network? It’s a dark money front founded by Norm Coleman, the former Republican senator from Minnesota who lost to Al Franken.

No he is not Michael Bolton. Not Michael Bolton the computer programmer. You know, the other Michael Bolton. I digress.
Rod Blum is apparently a think skinned, no talent clown who happens to represent the 1st district of Iowa. During an interview, which he requested, KCRG’s Josh Scheinblum wasted no time and had zero chill for Blum’s bullshit. Check out the full exchange here.
With a group of school children watching Rod Blum got to question two before going all “boom, outta here.” The question that got him was about his willingness to accept donations from out of his district while claiming to not represent anyone outside of his district. These are some real tough questions Rod. The problem, as many Iowans in the district see it now, is that Rod Blum represents moneyed interests with names like Adelson and Koch. We will never know because the groups that give Rod Blum his campaign cash do not have to disclose their donors.
Things did not get any better for Rod during his scheduled town hall in Dubuque when he was asked to defend his slavish adherence to the Trump-Ryan agenda.
How do people think things are going to go in Cedar Rapids tonight? The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last!

Rod Blum will not meet face-to-face with his constituents in a public forum in the largest city in his district. Why? I am guessing because he is scared of what his constituents will say to him in a face-to-face meeting.
Instead of actually speaking to the people he is supposed to represent in Congress, Blum will speak to an event sponsored by the Iowa Conservative Union on April 12th. The event is to take place at a Godfather’s Pizza—Herman Cain tie in perhaps—located in the Town and Country Shopping Center in Cedar Rapids. You can see where it is located here. If you would like to attend here is a link to the event’s Facebook page.
Apparently, these events held by the Iowa Conservative Union have been open to the public but this event is going to be held under an extreme vetting process. Extreme vetting has turned into the right wing’s new catchphrase for “making sure we keep put people who might not like our extreme views.” Or it can mean “keeping out the brown people.” Depends on the circumstance.
As usual Rod Blum’s website shows no public events because he is a coward and does not want to face his constituents save for friendly audiences screened for his approval. It is ironic that the right wing makes such a big deal about so-called safe spaces and trigger warnings considering how incapable their elected representatives are to hearing anything but carefully selected viewpoints that magically agree with their world view.
Rod Blum is a disgraceful representative of the first district because he does not actually represent the people of the first district. He represents Rod Blum and a small coterie of like-minded individuals. 2018 cannot come soon enough.
A while back I called Rod Blum a coward. I stand by that assertion because as the current presidential administration has shown itself to be nothing more than a totalitarian farce masquerading as a modern democracy he has remained silent.
How quiet? Just try and find something that Rod Blum has said about anything that has transpired over the past couple of weeks.
His Twitter account is basically a bunch of motherhood, apple pie, and America content for the right wing set. About the only topical tweet was a comment on the March for Life.
His Facebook page is more of the same minus a recent comment about the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to take the vacant seat on the Supreme Court.
I think it is high time that we up the pressure on the Congressman from the 1st District of Iowa to start answering where he stands on positions taken by the leader of his party—Donald Trump—and actions taken by his party.
I will call his office in Washington D.C. and Cedar Rapids, IA every day until I receive adequate answers to the following questions:
- When will Rod Blum hold a public forum in Cedar Rapids—the largest city in his district—to answer constituent questions?
- Does Rod Blum support the repeal of the Affordable Care Act?
- Does Rod Blum support proposed changes to Medicare?
- Does Rod Blum support proposed changes to Social Security?
- Does Rod Blum support the recent restrictions on entry into the United States put in place by executive order?
- Does Rod Blum support a congressional investigation into the Russian hacking that may have influenced the U.S. electoral process?
- Does Rod Blum support a congressional investigation into Donald Trump’s potential conflicts of interest?
I will provide updates, including the most recent comments from staff and additional questions, on the following linked page.
