The Joni Ernst Watch 11/16/2015

When it comes to Joni “Make ‘em squeal” Ernst or Steve King it’s clown shoes all day, every day. Recently, the conversation in Iowa has turned away from our homegrown whack-a-doos and focused on the nutcase circus that will be the Republican caucus.

It looks like Senator Ernst is more a creation of the Koch political machine than previously thought.

Were there really winners and losers from the GOP debate last week?

Pundits would like to ascribe those labels to the candidates, but considering how little movement there is in the polls does anyone voting in the caucuses and primaries actually care about the debates?

Here is what the GOP would like the debates to look like:

Ben Carson is a liar. Remember, this is a candidate who has put everything on how credible he is as a person. His whole shtick is that he may not have the experience of some of the other candidates, but he is a trustworthy person. Nope, he is a liar. Here is a guide to Ben Carson’s biggest fictions, misstatements, and exaggerations.

This is a man who claims to have better sources on the reality in Syria than the White House.

But, will Carson’s lies actually sink his campaign? Recent polling does not suggest that caucus and primary voters care.

NOTE: There will be no post on Monday November 23rd because I will be on vacation in Colorado hopefully avoiding any mention of Republicans running for President. Good luck, right?

When it comes to Joni “Make ‘em squeal” Ernst or Steve King it’s clown shoes all day, every day. Recently, the conversation in Iowa has turned away from our homegrown whack-a-doos and focused on the nutcase circus that will be the Republican caucus.

Here is what the junior senator from Iowa is staking her political reputation on right now: overturning the recently announced waters of the United States rules under the Clean Water Act.

It’s pretty much a symbolic vote because the president would likely veto the legislation and there are not enough votes to override such a veto. Nevertheless, Joni Ernst is staking her claim to be the biggest friend of polluters in the senate.

Iowa’s favorite son and Congress’ resident whacko Steve King wants to release the immigration hellhounds on protestors. Never mind that there are already laws in place regarding the detention of illegal immigrants, King wants to make sure that anyone disturbing his most excellent work on the hill are taken into custody and sent back to Mexico. Preferably over the wall that Donald Trump is going to build.

As the next debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin looms I get a lot of satisfaction out of the hissy fit that the Republican candidates threw after the debate on CNBC. If this crop of right wingers cannot handle questions from anchors of a business network, how are they going to handle questions from a hostile press corps or, god forbid, a foreign leader?

Ben Carson get ready for your moment in the sun and get ready for the scrutiny that it will entail. Apparently he thinks that a large chunk of the American populace is just stupid.

He, like so many in the right wing, also has a problem with birthright citizenship.

When did the Fourteenth Amendment become such a hard on for the right wing? Maybe they spent too much time fetishizing the Second Amendment that a fresh face was required for this election cycle.

Then again, a large segment of the American populace might just be stupid if it actually thinks Donald Trump would be a good person to have inhabiting the Oval Office. The Donald, who has never held elected office, does not think fellow political neophyte Ben Carson has the necessary experience to be the president.

Ted Cruz, defender of the Second Amendment and bad haircuts, is not the one from whom you want to take gun safety advice.   Ironic.

Rick Santorum is still a Republican presidential candidate. I think he is still a candidate. Or he is essentially turning this campaign season into a long audition to spend time on Fox News as the voice of the religious right. Or he is angling for a full time position at Hobby Lobby as a fellow in charge on bigotry. Either way, he is a tough guy because he has “taken on” the women who host The View while President Obama is a chicken.  Every time these guys open their mouths I am reminded of the taunting of a third grader trying to act tough but realizing that his pants are two sizes too big and no one cares about his threats.

The best line of the week comes from everyone’s favorite dorm room libertarian Rand Paul who compared free college tuition to handouts of heroin:

If someone offers you something for free, treat it as if they’re offering you heroin and think about the repercussions of what is free and what is a drug, an addicting drug like heroin and the ramifications of that. There’s nothing free. It just means somebody else is gonna pay for it, you don’t see them. So the plumber, the welder, the carpenter, the people who don’t go to college are being asked to pay for your education.

Yep, this guy wants to be the leader of the free world.

Apparently Joni does not like the current budget deal in Congress. It’s all because the budget makes cuts to the crop insurance program that most critics of federal spending agree is a handout to corporate farm interests.

Chuck Grassley is old and now he is looking back more than thirty years wondering where the next Ronald Reagan like candidate will come from.

When will Republicans stop worshipping at the altar of Ronald Reagan? You know, he was the president who increased taxes and grew the size of the federal government all while the national debt boomed.

Remember, this is the same party that has spent the last half-century trotting out “voodoo economics” like the holy grail of modern economic thought without a shred of evidence that the policies actually work. When will these clowns notice?

The GOP clown car made its way to Steve King’s annual pheasant hunt for the media. GOP presidential hopefuls Ted Cruz, Rick Santorum, Bobby Jindal, and Mike Huckabee got all “geared up” in blaze orange to make an appearance for the media looking all folksy and tough before changing back into suits to grovel for billionaires’ money.

Ben Carson is the leader of the moment for the right wing. Naturally, this means that he is going to get the close up his campaign can probably not handle. Just look at the thirteen ridiculous things that Ben Carson believes to get an understanding of what kind of person he truly is.

Ben Carson may be a neurosurgeon, but he definitely does not know anything about the efficacy of supplements that he has endorsed. Apparently, it’s just a fart pill Ben.

Jeb!’s campaign is dead in the water. He is reducing salaries and even though he has the support of the establishment his entire campaign is now based on attacking his golden boy Marco Rubio. He cannot emerge from the chaos of the presidential debates.

In the end, Jeb Bush’s problem is that he is Jeb Bush.

The GOP is dysfunctional. The recent inability to choose a speaker without it becoming an intra-party food fight is proof positive that something is broken. Some people trace the genesis of this dysfunction to the choice of Sarah Palin to be John McCain’s running mate in 2008.

When it comes to Joni “Make ‘em squeal” Ernst or Steve King it’s clown shoes all day, every day. Recently, the conversation in Iowa has turned away from our homegrown whack-a-doos and focused on the nutcase circus that will be the Republican caucus.

Apparently, Ernst is an expert on the role of biotechnology and GMOs now:

If we fail to embrace biotechnology as a safe, affordable and timely way to bring food production methods to developing and unstable nations, we are ultimately putting our military and our country at greater risk. How can this Administration and your agencies specifically work to help the public better understand biotechnology, so we can better address the national security challenges laid out by DNI?

It’s one thing to breed crops to deliver desirable traits. It is another thing entirely to tinker with the fundamental building blocks of life itself.

Ann Coulter wants Steve King—yes, that Steve King—to run for Speaker of the House. Actually, I like that idea.

Ben Carson is your new leader in the clubhouse.  2016 is turning out to be a total repeat of 2012 where each new week or so brought a new Republican leader. There was a time when Newt Gingrich was leading the polls in 2012. Newt freaking Gingrich!

It does not help the Donald’s cause here in Iowa that he is insulting the fundamental intelligence of the voters:

“@mygreenhippo #BenCarson is now leading in the #polls in #Iowa. Too much #Monsanto in the #corn creates issues in the brain? #Trump #GOP”

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 22, 2015

Is it time for Jeb! bounce?

Lincoln Chaffee dropped out of the Democratic nomination process. Lincoln Chaffee? Yep, that is why he dropped out.

When it comes to Joni “Make ‘em squeal” Ernst or Steve King it’s clown shoes all day, every day. Recently, the conversation in Iowa has turned away from our homegrown whack-a-doos and focused on the nutcase circus that will be the Republican caucus.

Steve King is really enjoying his moment in the sun as the right wing clown car is circling the state of Iowa trying to get his endorsement in some misguided faith that it represents true political gravitas. Given his new popularity, King has really been mouthing off lately which for him is saying something considering his past statements about…um, everything.

Apparently, he does not believe Muslims can assimilate into American culture:

But I can’t find models of the folks that, say, do the hajj to Mecca, I can’t find models where they’ve assimilated into the broader culture of civilization wherever they’ve gone.

What does this puffed up joker even mean by the words he speaks? I am guessing that he wants to see instances where Muslims came to a new country, renounced their faith, and became Christian. That might satisfy him.

He just couldn’t let things go and like right wing icon Joe Arpaio King decided to let loose his love of tents in the desert:

Then send them into Saudi Arabia, where they have the air-conditioned tents at Mecca. Those tents are not busy for 11 months out of the year, and they would assimilate into that civilization like a hand into a glove.

This is the same guy who thinks that voters will reward the Republican Party in November 2016 with even more leadership authority based on their excellent stewardship over the last couple of years. Good luck with that.

When confronted with conflicting realities most Republican candidates are best advised to just turtle. It will be better for your brand. Take Ted Cruz. The Calgary, Canada born senator from Texas recently spewed some right wing garbage about immigration and deportation while standing in front of a bible verse that is commonly interpreted to be about helping immigrants.

Maybe Steve King just needs to jump on the Trump bandwagon. In Nevada Trump is leading with 38% of the vote in recent polling.

One of the great tropes of the right wing is that the Jews were persecuted because they did not resist the pogroms of Nazi Germany. Never mind that this was the same militaristic state that crushed the combined armies of the France and the United Kingdom in stunning fashion. Keith Ablow, who somehow still manages to make people watching Fox News believe he has some kind of authority on some topics, really doubled down:

Granted, hindsight is 20/20. But it turns out it was a bad idea for any Jew to have turned over a gun. It was a bad idea for any Jew to have boarded a train. It was a bad idea for any Jew to have passed through a gate into a camp. It was a bad idea for any Jew to do any work at any such camp. It was a bad idea for any Jew to not attempt to crush the skull or scratch out the eyes of any Nazi who turned his back for one moment. And every bullet that would have been fired into a Nazi coming to a doorway to confiscate a gun from a Jew would have been a sacred bullet.

Sure Keith, a police state backed by a modern military was going to back down from a core belief because someone owned a handgun.

When it comes to Joni “Make ‘em squeal” Ernst or Steve King it’s clown shoes all day, every day. Recently, the conversation in Iowa has turned away from our homegrown whack-a-doos and focused on the nutcase circus that will be the Republican caucus.

Representatives Steve King and Rod Blum—both of Iowa and both of questionable judgment—voted against the continuing resolution to keep the government operating.

It is always a good idea to elect people to government whose sole mission is to see how bad they can run the government.

Steve King cannot figure out why Planned Parenthood remains popular:

I haven’t paid any attention to the polls. But am I surprised? Yes. That would explain some of the reasons why the leadership is not committing to defund.

Maybe the reason lies in the fact that Planned Parenthood provides a lot of services to women that would go unmet if the organization were defunded? But keep banging that drum. Over and over again.

However, Steve King is not as bad as House Oversight Committee Chair Jason Chaffetz who presented this horrible, no good, very bad graph:

BS_anti_PP_chart

See the problem? That’s right. In Republican World 327,000 is bigger than 935,573. Your “liberal math facts” do not apply when there is hay to be made with right wingers.

Chaffetx probably learned how to make graphs and present “facts” from the same jokers who put on the Values Voters Summit. The final session of the recent conference was entitled “How to Argue the Social Issues with Liberals and Libertarians” and was held in a standing room only conference room.  I find it interesting that the Values Voters Summit is concerned with libertarians as well, but oh well.

Remember, Rush Limbaugh is the standard bearer of what the right wing believes. Limbaugh now postulates that NASA is just a tool for “Muslim outreach.”   I do not even know what to say in response to logic smackdowns like that.

When it comes to Joni “Make ‘em squeal” Ernst or Steve King it’s clown shoes all day, every day. Recently, the conversation in Iowa has turned away from our homegrown whack-a-doos and focused on the nutcase circus that will be the Republican caucus.

Joni Ernst has been quiet lately, but maybe she has just been drowned out by the circus that is the Republican party these days. It looks like she is going to take a stab at rolling back clean water rules.

Does Steve King think he is “man-splaining” to Pope Francis:

I think that it would be better for the Vatican to focus more on theology, and less on this thing that they’ve now had to have a name change from global warming to climate change.

Then again, King just seems to hate on everybody:

The people on our side who pay any attention to this at all understand sharia is incompatible with the Constitution and that a sincerely devout Muslim — I might say, a devout Islamist — cannot seriously give an oath to support the Constitution, because it’s incompatible with his faith.

So, John Boehner just up and quit. No seriously, he behaved just like everybody’s fat, racist friend on South Park Eric Cartman:

cartman-screw-you-guys

Jeb! does not like multiculturalism very much:

We should not have a multicultural society.

Well, that was emphatic.

God damn, Sarah Palin is a moron.

BTW, who hasn’t confused Leonardo da Vinci with Leonardo DiCaprio?
